WHITEHALL chiefs are hiring an £104,000 a year lawyer to oversee equality on the Falklands — with a population of just 3,662.

The legal whiz will lead a team whose roles include ensuring citizens on Britain’s far-flung South Atlantic outpost — also home to a million penguins — are not discriminated against.

An advert placed by the Government tells applicants: “You will provide legal and equalities and human rights comments on decision making reports and draft policies.”;

It adds the successful candidate will also “conduct some litigation, and have the conduct of some potentially controversial and high profile and politically sensitive matters”;.

They must be a qualified solicitor or barrister and will carry out a host of other legal tasks, including shaping future policy and legislation.

The Head of Legal Services will work in the capital Stanley for the Falkland Islands Government.

The post runs for up to four years and comes with 41 days of annual holiday, tax breaks, a relocation package plus help finding a home, and a free return flight every year to the UK — 8,000 miles away.

The group of islands was the centre of a 1982 war following an Argentine invasion. Some 255 British troops and 907 Argentinians were killed.

Keeping the archipelago costs the UK Government pays around £60million a year.

Last year, a police inspector was sought on a £52,000-a-year salary — plus another 25 per cent of the year’s wage if the four-year contract was completed. The job also came with 41 days of leave and a relocation package.

Britain recently vowed not to surrender the Falklands despite the new Labour Government agreeing to hand over the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean to Mauritius.
