Greece govt rejects assylum seekers returning from Germany

Published on April 25, 2025 at 02:01 PM

The Greek government has made it clear it would not want to take back refugees who initially applied for asylum in Greece and subsequently submitted another application in Germany.

Migration Minister, Makis Voridis, told news channel Skai that such a return would be out of the question under the current circumstances.

“As long as there is no fair distribution of burdens within the European Union, Greece will not accept any returns,”; said Voridis.

If there are requests for returns from Germany, Athens will still examine them carefully, the minister said. However, Voridis made it clear that “We will not be particularly open to such a request in any case.”;

The German Federal Administrative Court ruled nearly two weeks ago that the deportations of single, healthy and employable migrants to Greece are permissible.

In spite of deficiencies in the Greek reception system, this group of people are not at risk of extreme hardship in the country, the court in the eastern German city of Leipzig decided.

It thus dismissed the lawsuits of a stateless man from the northern Gaza Strip and a Somali.
