House minority caucus demands justice, compensation for Uromi attack victims

The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has called for justice and adequate compensation for the victims of the mob attack on travellers in Uromi, Edo State.

The caucus also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, confirmed that 14 people have been arrested in connection with the attack, which claimed the lives of hunters traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano.

In a statement jointly signed by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, Minority Whip Ali Isa JC, and Deputy Minority Leader Aliyu Sani Madaki, the caucus strongly condemned the killings, describing them as “reprehensible”;; and a threat to national unity.

“It is with extreme shock and grief that we received the news of the barbaric murder of about 16 Nigerians, mainly northerners, by a gang of lawless anarchists in Edo State in the last couple of days,”;; the statement read.

The lawmakers warned that such violent attacks, if left unchecked, could undermine peace in the country. They urged Nigerians to seek lawful means of resolving security concerns rather than resorting to mob justice.

“We are a nation under the rule of law, and our law enforcement agencies are always available to address concerns through appropriate channels,”;; the caucus stated.

They further called on President Tinubu to ensure a swift and thorough investigation into the killings, stressing that justice must be served to prevent future occurrences. Additionally, they demanded adequate compensation for the families of the victims.

The caucus appealed for calm, urging Nigerians to remain peaceful while the authorities handle the matter.

“We express our sincere sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims and assure them that we, the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives, will remain vigilant until justice is done,”;; the statement concluded.
