IBB’s Memoir- Senator Osita reveals why Prof Nwosu couldn’t declare 1993 election result

The lawmaker representing Imo West senatorial district, Osita Izunaso, has revealed why a former National Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, did not declare the 1993 presidential election result.

The election, widely acknowledged as the most credible the country ever witnessed, was annulled by the former military head of state, Ibrahim Babangida.

Babangida recently published a book, ‘Journey in Service” which received both accolades and backlash among Nigerians.

Many prominent Nigerians, including President Bola Tinubu attended the book launch in Abuja where they hailed the former head of state and made monitory contributions to his work.

Senator Osita, addressing the floor of the Senate on Thursday, noted that while Babangida, who annulled the election was hailed and honoured, Nwosu, who conducted the election has been overlooked.

DAILY POST reported that the House of Representatives declined a motion to immortalise the former INEC boss.

Osita said, “Just recently, former President IBB held an event which everybody, including several people here, including the current president of the country attended.

“Everybody came to speak well of him because he is alive. If Nwosu was doing a colloquium today, Nigerians would still go the same way they line up to speak good of IBB.

“I also wanted to remind us that Nwosu was a chairman of INEC during a military regime; there was no way he would have announced results with a gun placed to his head.”
