2024 budget: ASUP seeks upward review for education

Published on December 13, 2023 at 12:12 PM

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has urged the Federal Government to include an upward review of education budgetary provisions in the 2024 appropriation bill currently before the National Assembly.

Mr Anderson Ezeibe, President of ASUP, stated this at a press conference ahead of the union’s 17th biannual national delegates conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

He criticized the current budget’s 7% allocation for education.

According to Ezeibe, the current draft before the National Assembly allocated 7.8 percent to the education sector.

“This implies that the country is further away from a solution to the underfunding in the sector.

“An upward review is imperative to reflect actual needs for the sector.

“This will ensure the immediate implementation of the approved new wage structure of 35 percent and 25 percent for chief lecturers and other categories of staff in the sector,”; he said.
