Adamawa anti-rape coalition gets new leadership, vows systemic change

Published on April 22, 2025 at 01:13 PM

The Coalition Against Rape and Violence, CARAV, has elected Hajiya Amina Hanga as its chairperson in Adamawa State.

Amina Hanga is the executive director of a non-government organisation, Isa Wali Empowerment Initiatives, IWEI.

CARAV is a group of activists from government and non-government organizations who came together to fight against rape and other forms of violence.

Others elected to various positions include Aisha Abubakar as vice chairperson, Abbas Ibrahim as secretary, Mustapha Gambo Muhammad as assistant secretary, Mustapha Muhammad as treasurer, and Dayyabu Abdulqadir Waziri as financial secretary.

The officials are to lead CARAV in the next two years.

In her speech, the newly elected CARAV chairman said rape requires collective efforts to combat and that the new officials are committed to lead the collaboration for maximum results.

She said, “We come together today not merely to remember why we began this journey, but to rekindle the fire that drives us. We are here to revive something that should never have gone quiet—a coalition united against rape, sexual violence, and all forms of abuse.

“We are here to re-energize our efforts, realign our strategies, and recommit to our shared mission of ending violence and creating safe spaces for survivors and communities.”

In her remarks, a founding member of the coalition, Maryam Ahmad Sabo, spoke of the need to prioritize prevention of rape, suggesting heightened public sensitization.

Speaking as a founding father, Professor Muhammad Tabi’u, SAN, explained that CARAV came into being as a direct response to a 2011 rape case involving some law enforcement officers.

“The case attracted public outcry until the culprits were brought to book by the court of law,”; he recalled, adding that from its inception, the coalition adopted tactical strategies against rape.
