A CLEANING expert has shared an easy 65p hack to remove tough stains from your rug, without getting in a professional.

Whether you're a parent with messy kids, or prone to clumsiness, spilling food and drink on your living room rug can be a very common occurrence.

It can be tricky to get stains out of rugs

And although trying to remove stains can prove to be a frustrating task, it doesn't have to be costly.

Taking to TikTok, cleaning whizz Ell Salter revealed that when she gives her rubs a scrub she uses a simple cupboard staple.

Ell revealed that all she uses to get her rug sparkling is bicarbonate of soda, which can be purchased from Aldi for just 65p.

Before starting the cleaning process, it's a good idea to take your rug outside, and give it a good shake.

Then, bring it inside again and sprinkle bicarbonate of soda across the rug.

Allow the product to sit for 20 minutes, before using a vacuum cleaner to suck it up.

The bicarbonate of soda will ensure there are no unpleasant odours left on the rug.

Single mum Ell then revealed that to make sure her rug is extra squeaky clean, she uses a steam mop to steam the rug.

Steaming should kill 99% of the bacteria left on the rug and will help loosen and dirt, which can be dabbed away with a microfibre cloth.

And the best part about this hack? It doesn't involve any scrubbing.

Liza Garrison from Ruggable revealed that another simple trick to get your rug clean is to simply throw it in the washing machine.

She revealed that you should deep clean rugs at least once a year, as they can be 4,000 times dirtier than a toilet.

Check the label to see if they can be washed in a machine and follow the care instructions.

Some might be too big to go in a domestic washer, so you may have to use the big machines at the dry cleaners.

Cleaning hacks and tips

Here are some tips to help you clean your home like a pro:

It’s best to avoid washing too frequently as some detergents can affect the rug’s vibrancy.

Liza also advised avoiding a popular TikTok hack which involves soaking your rug in the bath in detergent.

“This could damage the fibres, change its colour or leave it with a sticky residue,” she said.
