Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed has expressed sorrow over the tragic death of four staff members of the Bauchi State Urban Water and Sewerage Corporation who lost their lives during routine maintenance work at the Gubi Dam Water Treatment Plant.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, and made available on Monday, Mohammed described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has cast a shadow over the entire state.
“It is with deep sorrow and profound sadness that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, on behalf of the Government and the good people of Bauchi State, extends heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the four dedicated staf who tragically lost their lives,”; the statement read.
While mourning their death, the governor hailed the commitment of the deceased workers who died in the line of duty, noting that their sacrifice in ensuring water supply for the people of the state would not be forgotten.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with their immediate families during this time of grief. We pray that the Almighty grants them the strength to bear this great loss and comforts their hearts with His divine mercy,”; he added.
The state government also called for stricter safety measures and compliance with operational protocols across all public institutions to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
“The Bauchi State Government emphasizes the urgent need for heightened safety measures and strict adherence to established protocols in all government and industrial operations,”; he said.
The governor directed a thorough investigation into the incident and assured that the government would take all necessary steps to support the bereaved families and improve workplace safety.
He prayed for the souls of the deceased to rest in peace in Jannatul Firdaus and urged the people of Bauchi to stand in solidarity with the grieving families.
DAILY POST reports that tragedy struck at the Gubi Dam Water Treatment Plant yesterday as four workers lost their lives during a sludge cleaning operation in one of the plant’s tunnels.
The incident, which occurred at about 5pm, involved the late Shayibu Hamza, 48; Abdulmalik Yahya, 29; Jamilu Inusa, 29; and Ibrahim Musa, 42 â all residents of Firo village in Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the State Command, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the victims were carrying out a clarifier cleaning task when they were overwhelmed after entering the pit to dislodge blocked pipes.
“Despite immediate medical attention, they were later confirmed dead at the Specialist Hospital Bauchi,”; the statement said.
The police said they received a distress call and promptly deployed personnel to the scene.
The bodies were recovered and the plant’s management is said to be cooperating fully with investigators to determine the exact cause of the incident.
