Canada election: Opposition leader, Poilievre congratulates Carney

Published on April 29, 2025 at 06:39 AM

Opposition leader in the Canadian election, Pierre Poilievre, has conceded defeat and congratulated Mark Carney.

Conservative leader, Poilievre sent a congratulatory letter to the prime minister, Mark Carney on his projected election victory.

He, however, noted that he would be leader of a minority government.

Furthermore, Poilievre seemed to rule out stepping down as Conservative leader, despite leading his party to an election defeat that was unexpected just months ago.

“It will be an honour to continue to fight for you and be a champion for your cause as we go forward,”; Poilievre told supporters on Tuesday, according to the Guardian UK.

“We gained well over 20 seats, we got the highest vote share our party has received since 1988.”;

Mark Carney, a Liberal, has been elected as prime minister of the country, according to the projections of the national broadcaster CBC/Radio Canada.

Carney beat his opposite, Pierre Poilievre of the Conservative Party, to emerge the winner in one of the country’s most consequential elections in decades.
