Catholic Pope: ‘Bishop Kukah would have been ideal candidate’ – Fani-Kayode

Published on April 29, 2025 at 08:37 PM

Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has suggested a Nigerian who, in his view, would have been a great candidate for the Pope.

Fani-Kayode disclosed that Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto in Nigeria would have been an excellent choice for the papacy.

Posting on X, he described Kukah as a lion with intellectual depth and spiritual virility that no one can intimidate.

He wrote: “How I wish that our very own Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto was a Cardinal. He would have been a great candidate for Pope and he would have made an excellent one.

“If I were a Roman Catholic he would have my vote any day because he is the proverbial lover of God, man of peace, servant of truth, voice of the voiceless and defender of the poor.

“Nothing can intimidate or move him. He has the courage of a lion and the intellectual depth and spiritual virility to take on anyone on the world stage.

“Maybe some day in the future this will come to pass and the wonderful people of Zangon Kataf, Kaduna State, the North and indeed Nigeria will have so much to be proud of.

“The world certainly needs the likes of him at this difficult time. May God lead and guide the Cardinals as they prepare to go into Conclave for the historic vote to select the successor to Pope Francis for the seat of St. Peter.

“Whoever they end up electing, may that person help to make the world a safer, better and more peaceful place.”;

This comes as the Roman Catholic Conclave in the Vatican prepares to commence the process of appointing a new Pope.

This follows the who died recently at the age of 88 and was buried over the weekend.
