China driving global change – Russia

Published on April 29, 2025 at 07:34 AM

Russia on Monday praised China for being a major driver of global change that seeks to reverse the old order of colonial and neocolonial practices.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the remark at a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the BRICS Council gathering in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Quoting a Chinese proverb that says “God forbid you should live in an era of change,”; Lavrov said the dynamics of the present time require change.

“Today, China is one of the main drivers of global change, and perhaps such change is indeed necessary,”; he noted.

Lavrov shared Yi’s view of the struggle between those (countries) trying to preserve a unipolar system “used by the West to conduct world affairs,”; and those who want a multipolar world order.

The Russian official said the new order must be based on the principle of sovereign equality among all states as stated in the United Nations Charter.

Lavrov further noted that Russia, China, BRICS and SCO partners, and other allies “stand at the forefront of the movement for justice and equality.”;

“This imposes a special responsibility on us, especially in fulfilling the objectives set by the leaders of our countries,”; the minister added.

Lavrov informed Yi that Russia is preparing for the official visit of President Xi Jinping during the celebrations to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory.
