producers and the story team are working closely with UK on this long term storyline which will explore the effects of young onset dementia on Debbie and those close to her.

When the plot was confirmed, Sue said it was “an honour and privilege to be given this sort of storyline.”

But the 57-year-old actress has gone on to reveal her initial reaction to it, telling The Mirror: “I was a little bit frightened.”

She continued: “It was a lot of information to process, because it’s not like a drama series where you might be doing it for six weeks.

“This is playing someone with dementia for one, two, three years. So, it was a case of “Can I do it? Am I ready?”‘

“I don’t do things by halves. I’m either all in or all out. I like to research and get the best I can out of a script, so it can consume my life for as long as the story lasts.”

A source previously told us: “Sue was very shocked when she discovered she was being killed off.

“She was initially very sad and then furious and then upset again. It's taken her a long time to come to terms with it.

“She had no intention to leave the show and couldn't believe it when they called her in and broke the news.”

Sue first appeared on Coronation Street in 1984 when she was just 15-years-old.

She was on the show for only a year before returning in 2019 and becoming a fan-favourite.

Her sad storyline has been met with outrage from die-hard viewers of Corrie, who have to try and get bosses to axe it.

Its organiser said: “We, the fans, are urgingITVto reconsider this idea.

“Debbie is not just a character, she represents the warmth, humour and resilience that Coronation Street has been celebrated for since its inception.

“By giving Debbie a cruel, long-running dementia storyline, followed by her death, the show risks alienating its most loyal audience.”
