Danish PM pledges to support Greenland against Trump’s pressure

Published on April 02, 2025 at 06:21 PM

Denmark's Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has pledged to support Greenland in the face of US President Donald Trump's expressions of interest in acquiring the Danish semi-autonomous territory, as she arrived in Nuuk for talks with its incoming government.

Frederiksen made this statement on Wednesday at the start of her three-day visit to the vast Arctic island, less than a week after US Vice President JD Vance’s visit to the territory received a frosty reception from authorities in Denmark and Greenland.

“The US shall not take over Greenland. Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” Frederiksen declared.

The Danish leader emphasised her commitment to supporting Greenland in what she described as a very difficult situation.

Before her visit, Frederiksen had expressed her intention to strengthen Copenhagen’s ties with the island, highlighting the importance of respectful cooperation at a time of significant pressure on Greenland.

Greenland’s incoming Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen—who won last month’s parliamentary election and is set to form a coalition government—welcomed Frederiksen’s visit, affirming that Denmark remains Greenland’s closest partner.

Frederiksen also vowed to do what she could to ensure equal rights for Greenlanders and Danes within the Danish realm.

“Above all, we need to discuss the foreign and security policy situation, geopolitics, and how we tackle this very difficult challenge together—because that is what matters now,” she said.
