England’s ‘smallest city’ crowned BEST place to visit in UK where iconic cult film was shot – does yours make the list?

THE BEST inland town to visit in the UK has been crowned – so did your local area make the cut?

The destination, which was the picturesque filming location on a cult classic is actually not even a town at all, as it has been dubbed “‘s smallest city.”

Wells, in , has a population of just 12,000 people, but has maintained its city status since the medieval times, thanks to its stunning Gothic cathedral.

The quaint, tourist location was previously crowned by Which? as the best inland town in Britain, scoring five out of five for its attractiveness and array of activities.

And you may recognise the tiny city, as it was used as the fictional village of Sandford in the classic film Hot Fuzz, which stars and .

An abundance of the most iconic shots in the film, such as the Swan Hotel, the corner shop where the characters buy Cornettos and the marketplace where the gun fight takes place, are real spots that fans can visit.

Wells has also featured as the filming location for a variety of other films and TV shows, such as , Wolf Hall and the Dungeons and Dragons film.

Of course, the town's main attraction is the 14th century cathedral, which took over 300 years to construct.

It houses over 300 sculptures and you can even see Britain's oldest functioning clock.

For avid fans, daily tours of the cathedral are on offer, or for those keen to take things at their own place, you can stroll around yourself.

The city also boasts a lovely market place, which boasts stalls on Wednesday and Saturday.

The market sells everything from homemade crafts to fresh fruit and vegetables.

Wells also boasts ‘s oldest residential street, Vicar's close, which features charming brick houses and a cobblestone street.

And horror fans can even visit The City Arms, a haunted pub situated in a former jail.

Due to its abundance of activities, Wells has received tons of positive views on Trip Advisor.

One reviewer said: “The cathedral is an amazing and beautiful building.

“The centre of Wells is also interesting and well worth exploring. As an added bonus, there's a great market in the square each Saturday.-artisan foods and crafts.”

Another reviewer shared: “This is a lovely place to spend the day, especially on market day.

“There are lots of independent shops including coffee shops and the Crown hotel offers lovely lunches that are reasonably priced.”

Second on Which?'s list of the UK's best inland town was Avebury in , which is encircled by a prehistoric stone circle of the same name.

Third on the list was Corfe Castle in , which was built by William the Conqueror and fourth and fifth place went to Port Sunlight and Grassmere respectfully.
