EPL: Southampton become first team to be relegated

Published on April 06, 2025 at 03:42 PM

Southampton have become the first team to be relegated from the Premier League this season.

This follows a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

To earn a stay of execution, they needed Wolves to either draw or lose to Ipswich and to avoid a defeat of their own against Spurs.

But Jorgen Strand Larsen's late winner at Portman Road put one nail in the coffin on Saturday and a 3-1 loss in north London on Sunday confirmed a swift return to the Championship.

Their tally of 10 points so far is the joint-lowest after 30 games on record.

The result leaves Southampton with 10 points after 31 fixtures and a goal difference of -51.

The Saints have only won two and drawn four matches this term. They become the fastest team to drop down into the Championship.
