Europa League: Rene Meulensteen gives credit to two Man Utd players after Lyon win

Sir Alex Ferguson’s former Manchester United assistant, Rene Meulensteen, has given credit to two Red Devils players following the team's Europa League quarter-final second leg victory over Lyon on Thursday.

Man United looked set for an embarrassing Europa League exit at Old Trafford after throwing away a 2-0 first-half lead.

The hosts trailed 10-man Lyon 4-2 during the encounter in England.

But United scored three goals in the final seven minutes of extra-time to qualify for the semi-finals on a 7-6 aggregate win.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Meulensteen gave credit to Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo for their ‘amazing' goals against the French Ligue 1 side.

“Manchester United were down and out. Credit where credit is due with Ruben Amorim,” Meulensteen said.

“He puts Harry Maguire upfront, against the run of play Lyon go 4-2 up and with the penalty you think that’s it.

“You could see Lyon crumbling, but credit to the way Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire took their goals. Amazing.

“Everybody walks away in disbelief. Ruben Amorim couldn’t get into the dressing room quick enough!”

Man United will now face La Liga side Athletic Bilbao for a place in the Europa League final this season.
