It has emerged that Manchester United's duo of Noussair Mazraoui and Victor Lindelof left Old Trafford early, during their Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon on Thursday night.
The defenders had to travel back home due to personal issues, according to manager Ruben Amorim.
“We had a problem with Nouss at half-time and Vic had a personal problem and he had to leave, so all this stuff happened during this game, but in the end it was a good game,”; Amorim told TNT Sports.
In their absence, United produced a remarkable comeback to beat the Ligue 1 side 7-6 on aggregate and reach the semi finals.
Having led 2-0 thanks to goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot, Amorim's men found themselves 4-2 down and on the brink of a hugely damaging defeat in extra time.
But after Lyon were reduced to 10 men after Corentin Tolisso’s dismissal, they picked up themselves and won the game.
Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot, Kobbie Mainoo curled into the far corner and Harry Maguire delivered the winner with a late header to keep their season alive.
