Federal lawmakers urged to increase Code of Conduct Tribunal membership

Published on April 22, 2025 at 07:16 PM

The National Assembly was told on Tuesday to amend the Act establishing the Code of Conduct Tribunal in order to increase the number of panelists for effective adjudication of infractions by public servants.

The call was contained in a communique after the Capacity Building Workshop on the Online Assets Declaration System, stating that the current number of judges has become grossly inadequate to cater for the ever-increasing ethical breaches by public servants.

The workshop, which was convened by the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) in conjunction with the Code of Conduct Bureau and supported by IDEA/European Union under the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption programme in Jos, Plateau State, also urged the Federal Government to properly fund the judicial body.

The communique was signed by Eze Onyekpere of the Centre for Social Justice, Richard Oketa of the Code of Conduct Bureau, Awashima Atu of Plateau CSO, and Celestine Gogwim of Plateau State Civil/Public Service.

The communique called for an accelerated legislative amendment that would make assets and liabilities declaration by public servants open to citizens.

It added that, since civil society and other stakeholders have agreed to intensify engagement with the Online Assets Declaration System, efforts should include engagement with the Code of Conduct Bureau and MDAs, raising awareness, education, and advocacy for the enhanced declaration of assets and liabilities.
