A late-night fire outbreak has ravaged Batakashi village in Garki Local Government Area of Jigawa State, destroying more than 45 houses, 35 silos, and scores of livestock, leaving behind widespread devastation and displacement.
The inferno, which occurred on Friday night, also left three residents injured, eyewitness, Malam Musa told reporters.
He described the incident as overwhelming, noting that several families lost their homes, food reserves, clothing, and valuable possessions in the blaze.
“Everything happened so fast. Many people couldn’t salvage anything. Livestock perished in the flames and our silos are gone,”; Musa said, his voice heavy with emotion.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, local authorities have begun assessing the extent of the damage. Chairman of Garki Local Government Area, Hon. Adamu Hudu Kore, visited the affected village on Saturday to sympathize with the victims and offer preliminary support.
“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. The local council is working closely with emergency agencies to provide immediate relief to the victims,”; Kore stated during his visit.
Meanwhile, the Jigawa State Police Command says it is yet to receive an official report on the incident. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, said, “We are aware of the situation and are awaiting a detailed report from our officers on the ground. Further information will be provided once investigations commence.”;
