Unidentified gunmen have abducted a 400-level Economics student of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), Augustine Madubiya, during a violent attack on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

The incident, which occurred around 3:00am at Istijaba Villa, an off-campus hostel in Unguwar Jeji, also left a local resident dead.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers, numbering five, found some students sleeping outside due to the heat and demanded money. When the students said they had none, the gunmen began assaulting them. Amid the chaos, a resident, Malam Siddi Hussaini, who came out to tend his cattle, was shot dead.

One of the students, Collaneous Steven, a 200-level Business Administration student, managed to escape the assailants.

Reacting to the incident, the Vice Chancellor of FUBK, Professor Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, visited the scene in company of the Divisional Police Officer of Kalgo Division and officials from the Department of State Services (DSS).

Addressing the students, the Vice Chancellor added that he had informed the Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, through the Secretary to the State Government and the Director of Security Services.

The university expressed appreciation to the District Head of Unguwar Jeji and local residents for their support and called for continued assistance from the state government and security agencies.
