Haiti heading to point of no return, total chaos – UN warns

Published on April 22, 2025 at 05:47 AM

The United Nations, UN, special representative to the troubled Haiti has warned that the country is approaching a “point of no return”; leading to “total chaos.”;

Rampant gang violence has surged in Haiti in recent weeks and continues to spread to new areas of the country.

Maria Isabel told the UN security council that the people of Haiti are experiencing growing levels of vulnerability and increasing skepticism about the ability of the state to respond to their needs.

According to her, “Haiti could face total chaos,”; calling for urgent international aid to avoid that fate.

“I urge you to remain engaged and answer the urgent needs of the country and its people,”; she said.

Salvador noted that the nation's capital, Port-au-Prince, has been marred by cholera outbreaks and gender-based violence alongside a deteriorating security situation.

Major parts of Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, are under the control of rival armed gangs who carry out widespread murders, rapes and kidnappings.

The armed groups have been battling for control of Port-au-Prince and clashes have intensified as the rival gangs attempt to establish new territories.
