I wasn’t informed on closure of Lagos Independence Bridge — Umahi

Minister of Works Dave Umahi said he was not informed before the closure of Independence Bridge in Lagos State, which resulted in traffic gridlock on Wednesday.

Umahi disclosed this on Thursday when he arrived in Lagos State on the instruction of President Bola Tinubu.

According to him, the Federal Government did not authorise the closure of the bridge.

“I am here as directed by Mr. President. The President watched the agony that Lagosians went through yesterday (Wednesday) for the reason of closing the Independence Bridge for rehabilitation. I am very displeased, even though rehabilitation is important.

“He has asked me to be in Lagos and to free the traffic.

“I have looked at the structural problem; I am aware of it. We designed the rehabilitation, but unfortunately, when the bridge was to be closed, I was not informed.

“The controller did that on her own, and it's very unfortunate,” he said.

Recall that Lagosians experienced heavy gridlock on Wednesday due to the closure of the Independence Bridge.
