The lesser-seen side of Europe’s wildest holiday island – and how I escaped unscathed for once

Published on April 05, 2025 at 09:12 PM

NOTORIOUS for being the party capital of Europe, Ibiza is not exactly renowned for its calm and relaxed atmosphere.

The island has world-famous beach clubs, eccentric superclubs (including the world’s largest, Privilege), and a well-located airport, where early morning flights are frequently missed thanks to the all-night raves and heavy hangovers.

But venture a little further away from the raucous bars and you will soon realise the White Isle is a paradise for wellness enthusiasts.

Ever practised yoga in a cave? I sure hadn’t until my visit there.

But the spiritual experience should be on every wellness-lover’s bucket list.

The hour-long vinyasa-style flow and meditation class takes place within a craggy rockface on the western coast of the island, where the sun and lapping sea waves are your fitness backdrop.

And with the noise of the ocean lulling me and my fellow yogis into a zen-like state, I felt so relaxed that I barely had an appetite for my veggie-packed breakfast, a little further down the coast at The Skinny Kitchen.

The restaurant can be somewhat of a hotspot at night.

But during the day it attracts a mellow crowd of health-conscious brunchers tucking into plates of halloumi, avocado and poached eggs.

For those looking to properly unwind, the Zentropia Palladium Spa is the place to head.

When I stepped inside its airy walls, the scent of eucalyptus and soft ambient music instantly transported me to a different world.

Its hydrotherapy circuit, complete with saunas, steam rooms and a series of warm and cold plunge pools, is the perfect way to reset after a day in the sun.

I also booked a deep-tissue massage, and let’s just say it was so good, I nearly floated out of the treatment room.

Sticking with the wellness theme, I’d booked to stay at TRS Ibiza Hotel, an adults-only, all-inclusive retreat tucked away on the quieter side of , but within easy reach of the island’s best beaches.

Decorated in a fresh, neutral palette, my dreamy suite featured a king-sized bed so comfortable it made me question leaving it at all.

Golden sands

Not to mention the floor-to-ceiling windows that flooded the space with natural light. It was such a treat at sunset.

But the real highlight? My private balcony overlooking the sun-covered .

There is something about waking up to those turquoise waters that instantly puts you in holiday mode.

The on-site restaurants are on a par with the bedrooms, serving everything from fresh Mediterranean seafood to vibrant Mexican flavours.

There are also five bars, for anyone who does want to let their hair down in true style, as well as speedy room service that will even deliver shots of spirits to your bedroom door.

Frozen, classic, or spicy? Whichever way you like it, make sure you order a margarita, too.

It is Ibiza, after all.

The cocktails are expertly mixed, and the bartenders know exactly how to cater to every mood, whether you are after a poolside pina colada or a sophisticated martini.

If you do fancy a bit of a boogie, then Atzaro Beach Club offers a party atmosphere, but in a tranquil setting that is a world away from the neon rooms and heavy thuds of the nightclubs.

Luckily, for anyone who has indulged in one too many shots the night before, the TRS Hotel is only a short walk from Cala Gracio and Cala Gracioneta, two of Ibiza’s most stunning coves.

And a quick dip in the crystal-clear waters will sort you out in no time.

Strolling through the soft golden sands, listening to the sounds of the ocean, I found it hard to believe I was only minutes from the buzzing bars and clubs.

That’s the beauty of Ibiza — your holiday can be as chilled or as boisterous as you choose.

On my last day, I decided to properly explore the island (or its coastline, at least) with a half-day boat trip, which I had arranged directly through my hotel.

Just keep your eyes peeled for jellyfish before you jump into the water.

It was the perfect way to end my trip, snorkelling in hidden caves and sipping champagne as the sun set over Es Vedra.

Who says Ibiza is just about the parties?
