Igbos unfairly blamed for national issues — Abia Assembly member

Published on April 18, 2025 at 10:40 AM

A member of the Abia State House of Assembly, Nnamdi Ibekwe, has expressed concern that Igbo people living in parts of the country are being profiled.

Ibekwe, who said this during the plenary session of the House on Monday, regretted that the Igbos are usually dragged into matters that they did not cause or participate in.

Presenting his “Matter of Urgent Public Importance” address, Ibekwe, who represents Bende North constituency, expressed worry over what he called the “continued, uncontrolled attack on Ndi Igbo across the country on the slightest provocation, even when Ndi Igbo are not involved in the issue.”

He cited the recent case of the killing of some Northerners in Edo State, where some persons still blamed the Igbos for an incident that happened outside their zone, and called for urgent steps to address the wrong profiling.

Responding to the urgent call, members of the Abia State House of Assembly agreed that the issue required the involvement of the governors, political leaders, and other leaders of thought from the South East to discuss and find solutions to the challenge.

Meanwhile, the members representing Aba North constituency, Aaron Uzodike, and Kalu Nwoke of Ohafia South, appreciated Governor Alex Otti for the clean environment and road construction in parts of Aba and the ongoing work on the popular Mmuri Bridge, which had been claiming lives during accidents.
