India vs Pakistan: China calls for restraint in Kashmir after gunfire exchange

China on Monday called on India and Pakistan to “exercise restraint”;.

This comes after the Indian army said soldiers from the two countries exchanged gunfire in the disputed Kashmir region for a fourth consecutive night.

“China hopes that the two sides will exercise restraint, meet each other halfway, properly handle relevant differences through dialogue and consultation and jointly maintain regional peace and stability,”; foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said in a statement.

The statement follows the that targeted tourists in Pahalgam in the ‘Indian Illegally Occupied' Jammu and Kashmir.

Twenty-six men were killed in the attack, the worst on civilians in the region for a quarter of a century.

India claimed two of the three shooters were Pakistani nationals, a claim Islamabad denied.

India has said there were Pakistani elements to the attack, a claim Islamabad denied.

India and Pakistan have been laying claims to Kashmir, and have fought two wars over the region.
