Indonesia make decision on Trump tariff response

Published on April 06, 2025 at 11:15 AM

Indonesia is the latest country to make a decision on US President Donald Trump's 32 per cent trade tariff.

Recall that Trump had on Wednesday announced a 32% tariff on Southeast Asia's largest economy, Indonesia.

However, according to the Chief Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto, Indonesia will not retaliate against Trump's 32% trade tariff.

Hartarto said in a statement on Sunday that Indonesia would pursue diplomacy and negotiations to find mutually beneficial solutions after Trump announced sweeping global tariffs a few days ago.

“The approach was taken by considering the long-term interest of bilateral trade relations, as well as maintaining the investment climate and national economic stability,” Hartarto said.

Hartarto added that the Indonesian government will gather inputs from businesses on Monday to help formulate a strategy to address the US tariff.

According to him, Indonesia will find ways to increase trade with European countries as an alternative to the US and China.
