The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned marketers of industrial and agro-chemicals across Kebbi State against selling their products to unknown individuals.
The State Coordinator of NAFDAC in Kebbi, Alhaji Muyideen F. Suleiman, issued the warning while addressing chemical dealers at a one-day sensitisation programme held in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.
The session brought together marketers of industrial and agro-chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides from the 21 local government areas of the state.
Suleiman stressed the importance of obtaining proper listing and certification from NAFDAC before marketing such products, noting that chemicals used in agriculture and manufacturing can pose serious risks when misused.
“These chemicals include pesticides, fertilizers, solvents, caustic soda, calcium carbide, and even those used in soap and cosmetic production.
“While some are used for legitimate manufacturing purposes, others can be diverted for harmful uses,”; he said.
He advised marketers to be cautious and avoid selling to unknown individuals, saying: “Fertilizers contain dangerous components like ammonia, urea, and potassium hydroxide.
“If sold indiscriminately, these substances can pose serious risks.”;
The coordinator also emphasized the obligation of marketers to operate within safety standards and urged them to act responsibly in safeguarding public health and national security.
Earlier during the event, the Assistant Chief Regulatory Officer, Alhaji Ahmad Aliyu Aji, delivered a lecture on the hazards of unregulated chemical marketing.
He highlighted the importance of wearing protective gear, proper storage, and environmental safety practices when handling chemicals.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, the Chairman of the Fertiliser Marketers Association, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar Ciroma, commended NAFDAC for the initiative and pledged that members would comply with the agency’s regulations.
