APPLE has revealed plans to host a “special event” very soon – with a major free iPhone upgrade likely to be announced.

The tech giant has confirmed that WWDC event will kick off on June 9, 2025.

WWDC stands for Worldwide Developers Conference, and it's a week-long event aimed at app-makers.

But on the first day – Monday, June 9 – Apple will host a keynote that anyone can watch.

And the company typically uses this event to show off all the new features coming in future versions of iOS – the software that your iPhone runs on.

This is the update you'd typically get in September, which is packed with new no-cost upgrades for your existing iPhone.

It's not just iPhone either: we'd usually hear updates about other Apple gadgets too, like the iPad and Mac computers.

These upgrades are announced at WWDC first and then handed out to developers, so they can built new or upgrade apps and games in time for September.

“We’re excited to mark another incredible year of WWDC with our global developer community,” said Apple's Susan Prescott.

“We can’t wait to share the latest tools and technologies that will empower developers and help them continue to innovate.”

The event keynote is free to watch, even if you're not a developer.

And usually, Apple launches a public beta within a few weeks of the event so that regular people can rest out the new features too.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM WWDC 2025

For WWDC 2025, expecting a host of announcements about Apple software for your gadgets, rather than loads of physical devices being revealed.

Typically Apple uses other events to show off hardware.

The headline announcement will probably be iOS 19, the next-generation version of iPhone software.

This is expected to include a massive design overhaul that makes your iPhone's user interface look a lot more like the software on Apple's Vision Pro headset, which has more rounded icons.

Of course Apple hasn't confirmed this, so it might not come to pass.

We'll also likely see the following updates announced:

  • iPadOS 19
  • macOS 16
  • watchOS 12
  • tvOS 19
  • visionOS 3

That means updates for your iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and potentially the Apple Vision Pro too.

We'll also likely hear about some AI upgrades in the form of Apple Intelligence.

Hardware might not be completely absent, however.

It's rumoured that we might see a revamped Mac Studio with more powerful innards.

If you're wondering exactly when iOS 19 will come out, that's officially a mystery for now.

But Flying Eze's tech editor Sean Keach made a good guess at it as part of our iPhone 17 release date prediction.

Our guess puts the iOS 19 release date as Monday, September 15, 2025.

That would be just a few days after the expected iPhone 17 reveal day of Tuesday, September 9.

Sadly, Apple hasn't confirmed any of these plans, so all we have to go on for now is the WWDC 2025 date.

Apple likely won't reveal an exact iOS 19 release date at the event, but will instead probably say something vague like “this fall” or “later this year”.

It's unclear exactly which devices will get iOS 19. But one thing is certain: if your iPhone couldn't get iOS 18, it'll be cut off from iOS 19.
