Several states in the United States have received automatic tax deadline extensions due to natural disasters in 2024 and 2025.
The Internal Revenue Service, IRS, began accepting tax returns on 27 January.
Although taxpayers have until 15 April 2025 to file their 2024 tax returns, automatic extensions have been granted to areas across more than nine states.
This includes Florida, which was hit by both Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton between September and October 2024.
North Carolina is another state that was also affected by Hurricane Helene, a disaster which resulted in at least 215 confirmed deaths.
According to the IRS, an automatic 1 May 2025 deadline for 2024 tax returns will apply to taxpayers from the entire states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
The extended deadline for the remaining four states applies only to specific areas, including the City and Borough of Juneau in Alaska. The other affected areas are Chaves County in New Mexico, as well as several counties in Tennessee and Virginia.
