Israeli PM Netanyahu heads to Hungary amid ICC arrest warrant

Published on April 02, 2025 at 03:20 PM

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is heading to Hungary on a four-day visit, despite an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court, ICC, over allegations of war crimes in Gaza.

Hungary is a founding ICC member and is theoretically obliged to arrest and hand over anyone subject to a warrant from the court.

However, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said the country would not respect the ruling.

Netanyahu is expected to have a meeting with Orban in Budapest on Wednesday evening.

This trip will be Netanyahu’s second abroad since the ICC issued warrants to arrest both him and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant in November last year.

Netanyahu visited Washington in February and met with US President Donald Trump.

Israel and the United States of America are not members of the ICC.

The Hague-based court has criticised Orban’s decision to snub its warrant for Netanyahu.

The court’s spokesperson, Fadi El Abdallah, said it is not for parties to the ICC “to unilaterally determine the soundness of the Court’s legal decisions”;;.
