A CHAMPIONS LEAGUE and Ligue 1 referee has died aged just 42.

The French refereeing association confirmed Johan Hamel’s tragic passing on Wednesday morning.

French referee Johan Hamel has died aged 42According to L’Equipe, Hamel suffered a stroke in training.

The whistler took charge of his final match as Lille drew with Rennes on November 6.

He was on fourth official duty for Real Madrid’s home win over Celtic in the Champions League this season.

Hamel was also the fourth official in Europa League and Europa Conference League games in the last three years.
