JONJO SHELVEY is set to trigger a £3million contract extension, according to reports.

The Toon star began the season with a hamstring injury, but has returned to action in recent weeks.

According to the Mirror , one more appearance will trigger a one-year extension in the deal – worth £3m.

His next outing will be his 200th for Newcastle , and he outlined his happiness in the North East last summer.

He said: “You’re always playing for a new contract and I’m not thick, I’m not getting younger.

“I’m 30 years of age and I look about 40! You just want to be part of it.

“The only way for this club is up and a lot of people would want to be in my shoes. The positivity is great around the club.

“It’s a really good place to be at the minute, the city is buzzing. My missus and kids love it up here.”;

If Newcastle were worried about the clause, they could have looked to sell Shelvey last summer.

But Howe is a fan of the midfielder capped six times by England .

The Toon boss said: “He’s got real qualities that we need.

“He’s got experience, understands his position and he’s got that range of passing that the team clearly needs.

“He’s going to have a huge role to play.”;

Shelvey’s landmark 200th appearance could come this Sunday, when Newcastle travel to Southampton.
