Kano State recovers N27 million from ghost workers in payroll cleanup

Published on April 27, 2025 at 03:16 PM

The Kano State Government has recovered over N27 million from 247 ghost workers, including retirees and deceased individuals, uncovered during the March 2025 payroll audit.

Musa Tanko, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, said the individuals implicated in the fraud would face legal consequences.

According to Tanko, the discrepancies were detected during a validation exercise carried out by the Pay Parade Committee established by the government.

“The government remains steadfast in its resolve to cleanse the payroll system of irregularities and ensure that those responsible are held accountable,”; he stated.

He further revealed that the committee is set to begin full operations soon, engaging all relevant stakeholders to conduct a comprehensive review of the entire payroll system.

Tanko also confirmed that an in-depth investigation would be launched to determine the full scale of the fraud and identify all those involved.

He added that the recovered funds had already been returned to the Local Government Treasury.
