The Deputy Governor of Kebbi State and Chairman of the Joint Committee on Immunization, Primary Health Care, and Environmental Sanitation, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, has called for intensified efforts to contain the recent outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis in Aliero, Jega, and other affected local government areas.

Senator Tafida made the call during the opening session of a Joint Committee meeting held on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi.

He emphasised the urgent need for coordinated action to prevent the further spread of the disease, particularly as preparations for the next phase of routine immunization are underway.

The Deputy Governor urged local government chairmen and traditional rulers to step up public sensitization campaigns on immunization and environmental hygiene to ensure the success of health interventions across the state.

Congratulating the newly inducted members of the Committee, Senator Tafida reaffirmed the state government’s commitment, under the leadership of Governor Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu, to strengthening the primary healthcare system.

Speaking on behalf of the State Commissioner for Health, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Aliyu Nuhu Koko, noted that the meeting was timely, as the committee is preparing to launch another round of immunization targeting communicable diseases.

He confirmed that containment measures are ongoing in areas affected by the meningitis outbreak, which has unfortunately resulted in loss of lives.

Koko expressed appreciation to the Deputy Governor for his presence and support, despite the short notice of the meeting.

The Joint Committee on Immunization, Primary Health Care, and Environmental Sanitation includes representatives from the health and environment sectors, donor agencies, traditional institutions, and local government authorities.
