Kebbi governor suspends perm sec over lesbian, gay claim

Published on April 04, 2025 at 07:51 PM

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has reportedly suspended a permanent secretary, Nasiru Abubakar Kigo, from the cabinet office over his alleged claim that Kebbi and Sokoto States have the highest number of registered gays and lesbians.

Vanguard reports that the indefinite suspension was confirmed on Friday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris.

According to Idris, the permanent secretary has been issued a letter of suspension by the Kebbi State Head of Service, Malami Shekare.

The letter read: “According to civil service rules, you are to proceed on suspension pending the outcome of the investigation into your claims of registered homosexuals and lesbians in Kebbi State. Your statement constitutes social misconduct and is a stain on a morally decent state.”;

The state government had recently refuted Kigo’s claim, describing it as fictitious and baseless.

Kigo, also an Islamic cleric, made the controversial remark during Ramadan at a seminar held at Adamu Aliero Housing Estate, Birnin Kebbi.
