LaLiga: Real Madrid keep title defence alive with late winner against Athletic Club

Published on April 21, 2025 at 05:30 AM

Real Madrid kept their LaLiga title hopes alive with a narrow 1-0 win over Athletic Club on Sunday night.

Federico Valverde scored the winning goal in the 93rd minute of the game, to ensure Los Blancos keep pace with Barcelona.

The result sees Carlo Ancelotti's men remain four points behind Barca.

Following their elimination from the Champions League in the hands of Arsenal in midweek, it seemed Madrid were heading for another disappointing result.

The champions found it hard to score against Athletic, who had rotated heavily, following their Europa League victory over Rangers on Thursday.

And when Vinicius Junior found the back of the net, the goal was ruled out as Endrick was offside in the build-up.

Bellingham appealed for a penalty after going down softly in the area, and then fired over from close range in the final stages.

But Valverde had the final word, as he smashed into the top corner with a sliced, swerving effort.
