A MAJOR motorway has been closed in both directions after a horror crash sparked delays for thousands of drivers.
The M4 on the Prince of Wales Bridge is closed to traffic this evening after a serious road traffic accident.
Disruption is affecting traffic in both directions from junction 22 on the M49 to junction 23 on the M48.
The road has been closed in both directions with commuters heading home severely affected.
Multiple emergency services are at the scene, including police from both sides of the border and an air ambulance.
Drivers have been urged to follow a diversion via the M48 Severn Bridge.
A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “Emergency services are dealing with a road traffic collision on the M4 between Junction 22 and Junction 23 on the Prince of Wales bridge.
“The road is closed in both directions.”
A post on the National Highways website reads: “The M4 in South Gloucestershire/Monmouthshire is closed between J21 and J23 (Prince of Wales Bridge) due to a serious incident.
“Avon & Somerset Police andGwent Policeare on scene.
“Great Western Air Ambulance are also attending.”
