Man Utd transfer blow as they ‘face stiff competition from Real Madrid’ for World Cup sensation Cody Gakpo in January

MANCHESTER UNITED have been dealt a blow in the race to sign Cody Gakpo with Real Madrid reportedly registering an interest in the forward.

Several clubs have been tracking the PSV star who attracted further interest with his performances at the World Cup.

Real Madrid have entered the race to sign Cody GakpoGakpo scored three goals in five games for the Netherlands and showed he is capable of playing as a striker and as a winger.

According to the Mirror, Real Madrid have now entered the race to sign Gakpo.

The Spanish giants are said to be preparing a bid with the forward valued at around £60million.

PSV transfer chief Marcel Brands revealed no offers have been made for Gakpo, but the 23-year-old could leave for the right price in January.

He said: “We have still no official bids. Let’s see if some club will pay big money in January.”;

“Only 10-12 clubs can pay afford Cody Gakpo in January.

“Let’s see if it will happen — it has to be PSV record sale and also the right bid for Cody’s plans.”;

Newcastle are also believed to be monitoring Gakpo’s situation while Erik ten Hag has made the striker his number one target.

United were close to signing Gakpo in the summer before opting for Antony but the Dutchman is still open to moving to Old Trafford.

He said: “That [the summer] was a tough period.

“I learned from that. I’m going to do it differently. What comes, that comes.

“Now I wait for everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions.”;
