A TOP trainer claimed to have absolutely ‘no clue’ about a huge gamble that saw his 14-1 horse win at 9-4.
Asked why Braganza Bay was slashed in the markets after a surge of cash, Henry Daly replied: “F*** knows, honestly.”;
Winless in 11 and beaten nearly 200 lengths in the races he had finished, the five-year-old gelding looked a no-hoper.
But someone somewhere spotted something and thought a 3m1½f handicap hurdle at Hereford on Tuesday would be the making of him.
Bizarrely, Daly couldn’t see it himself, thinking the 12-1 odds he saw the night before were accurate.
Braganza Bay drifted to 14-1 before the money rolled in, absolutely decimating the runner’s odds.
And it proved to be an incredibly shrewd move, with the 9-4 fav winning easily from 11-4 Pottlerath.
Daly told the Racing Post he was clueless to the gamble.
He said: “F*** knows, honestly.
“I had a look the night before and saw him at 12-1 and thought that was fair enough, then I looked the morning of the race and saw he was 11-4.
“I thought, wow, people clearly know a lot more about this game than I do. There we are.
“He should have won way before now. I think the right term for him is enigmatic â he’s run perfectly well sometimes then ran terrible the next.
“He ran very well on his first try over hurdles at Market Rasen but he hasn’t since.
“I think the first time over the trip may have helped him here too, but in truth I haven’t got a clue.
“He’s off 88, which probably made the difference.
“The jockey Richard Patrick has confidence if the horses are running well too.”;
