The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has confirmed the repatriation of 62 nationals from the Republic of Mali through the Illela Border Command in Sokoto State.

According to a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the Controller of the Illela Command, Mr. Tony Akuneme, disclosed that the repatriated persons comprised 51 males and 11 females.

Akuneme explained that the Malians were escorted from the NIS Headquarters in Abuja by a team of eight immigration officers, led by Inspector Mamoud Sadiq, and transported in two buses. The team reportedly arrived at the Illela Border Post around 8:00 p.m. on Friday.

“Upon their arrival, I directed the Assistant Controller in charge of Human Resources, Adamu Mshelia—who also heads the Anti-Smuggling Unit—to oversee the proper documentation of the repatriated individuals,”; Akuneme said.

He added that after due processing, the irregular migrants were handed over to officers of the Niger Republic Police at the Birnin Konni control post, where they underwent further screening and documentation before being received by the local police chief, known as the Commisere.

In a related update, Akuneme revealed that construction work is currently ongoing at the Illela Control Post as part of efforts to strengthen border operations.

He noted that the NIS Comptroller-General, Kemi Nandap, has authorized the development of both mega and mini Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) at the site.

“The construction company has begun land clearance and the demolition of dilapidated, unserviceable structures.

“We commend the CG for this significant upgrade, which aligns with her commitment to curbing irregular and prohibited migration across the country,”; he stated.

Akuneme also assured the public that the security situation in the Illela and Tangaza areas remains under control, with the presence of military and other security forces addressing potential threats from Lakurawa bandits.
