The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy, Abubakar Muhammed, following the accidental discharge of a locally-made firearm, commonly known as a dane gun.
Contrary to earlier reports suggesting an explosion, police clarified that the incident was not caused by any form of explosive device. According to the police spokesperson, ASP Mansir Hassan, the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m along Josawa Road in the Abakpa area of Kaduna.
Responding swiftly to a distress call, a team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kawo Division arrived at the scene. The blast-like noise turned out to be the result of the accidental discharge of the firearm, which also left seven other individuals with varying degrees of injuries. They are currently receiving treatment.
Senior officials, including the Commissioner of Police, the Garrison Commander of the 1 Division Nigerian Army, the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Chairman of Kaduna North Local Government, visited the location for on-site assessment.
The police anti-bomb squad confirmed the weapon involved was a dane gun—an improvised, single-shot firearm commonly used in parts of West Africa. These guns are known for their lack of safety mechanisms and reliability, often contributing to both accidents and criminal activities such as robbery and banditry.
Further investigations are ongoing to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident. The police command expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and promised to keep the public informed as new details emerge.
