As the people of Plateau State are trying to come to terms with the recent attacks in some communities of Bokkos LGA, two villages in Bassa LGA were attacked on Sunday night, resulting in 47 fatalities and scores of injuries.
It was gathered that the communities attacked were Zike and Kimakpa in Kwall District of Irigwe Chiefdom in the aforementioned LGA.
DAILY POST recalls that over two weeks ago, more than 50 people were killed and their means of livelihood destroyed in some communities of Bokkos LGA, which sparked serious outcry across the state and the nation at large.
The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, and DIG B.D. Kwazhi all visited the state to see how these killings can be halted.
Sadly, even while the killings in Bokkos were ongoing, there were still pockets of killings in Irigwe Chiefdom.
Despite the aforementioned visits by security chiefs and stakeholders' meetings, the killings have now shifted to Irigwe Chiefdom in Bassa LGA.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang and a former military administrator in the state, Rear Admiral Bitrus Atukum (rtd), had alleged that the attacks were targeted at impoverishing the affected communities and seizing their ancestral lands.
DAILY POST also gathered that the incident, which occurred on Sunday night, left the affected communities in grief, fear, and devastation, as survivors recount the horror.
However, the Secretary-General of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Danjuma Dickson Auta, who confirmed the attack, disclosed that 47 bodies had so far been recovered.
He said, “An attack on Zike and Kimakpa communities in Kwall District of Irigwe Chiefdom in Bassa LGA resulted in 47 confirmed deaths, with many injured.”
“The scale of this attack suggests a well-planned and coordinated assault on the communities,” he decried.
As of the time of filing this report, both the Plateau State Police Command and Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) have yet to release any official statement regarding the killings.
