Princess Kate Middleton to cheer on England’s men and women in rugby World Cup after succeeding Prince Harry in RFL role

ENGLAND will have the Royal seal of approval as the Princess of Wales will be cheering them towards the semi-final.

Kate Middleton will watch Shaun Wane’s men against Papua New Guinea.

And after she will attend Craig Richards’ women team take on Canada in Wigan on Saturday.

It is her first engagement since becoming royal patron of the Rugby Football League in February – succeeding Prince Harry.

She was handed the role by the late Queen Elizabeth II and holds a similar position as patron of the Rugby Football Union.

RFL chairman Simon Johnson said: “We will be delighted and honoured to welcome the Princess of Wales for the first time as royal patron.”;

“With both our England teams playing important World Cup matches on Saturday, her presence will enhance a special occasion for our sport, for the World Cup and for the famous rugby league town of Wigan.”;

England’s men’s team have made a flying start to the Rugby League World Cup winning all three of their group games.

The Three Lions demolished both Samoa and Greece as well as defeating France.

Australia and New Zealand remain the two favourites in the tournament but England have a chance with the bookie making them third most likely to win the World Cup.

As for the women’s team, they similarly made a great start to their campaign defeating Brazil in a 14-try victory in Headingly.

Courtney Winfield-Hill and Amy Hardcastle starred as they won a comfortable 72-4.

It was Brazil’s first ever World Cup match.

The Lionesses are the favourites to win the tournament but are expected to be pushed by New Zealand.
