A former governorship aspirant in Kebbi State, Salihu Nataro, has accused the state government of targeting him for political reasons following moves to demolish his ancestral home in Jega Local Government Area.
In a chat with journalists in Abuja, Nataro alleged that the planned demolition was a retaliatory action for his public criticism of Governor Nasir Idris’ administration, especially over what he described as the government’s focus on “prestige projects”; rather than addressing the pressing needs of the people.
“I know this is political vendetta, because before, some people were going about telling the governor that Nataro would run again for the governorship,”; Nataro said.
“Then I had an interview with journalists where I urged the governor to reassess his governance strategies and focus on projects that will help improve the economy.”;
Nataro described the house under threat as a significant family property with deep historical relevance, inherited from his late father, who he referred to as a well-known philanthropist in the area.
“This house that the government wants to demolish was inherited from my very philanthropic father. The house in question belongs to the people of Jega because it was put up by the first ruler of Jega â Sarkin Marina,”; he stated.
He also called on Governor Idris to address growing speculation around his alleged disagreement with the state’s Accountant General, especially regarding the disbursement of Value Added Tax (VAT) revenues, which he believes is contributing to the political tension.
While dismissing speculation that he plans to defect to the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP), Nataro maintained that the demolition threat is a clear attempt to silence dissent and intimidate him into political submission.
In response, the Kebbi State Government denied the allegations of political persecution, stating that the demolition was part of a broader road expansion and infrastructure rehabilitation effort.
According to a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, the road dualisation project is being executed in line with professional standards and includes drainage construction, embankments, stone-pitching, and access culverts.
“The expansion will entail drainage, embankments, including stone-pitching, access culverts,”; the statement read.
“The governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, is determined to ensure the best for Kebbi and does not pander to base sentiments.”;
The government added that due process is being followed, with the Ministry of Works engaging with property owners affected by the project.
