I was the Royals’ cleaner – here are 3 Tesco bargains I swear by to leave your washing smelling ‘professionally cleaned’

Published on March 24, 2025 at 01:34 PM

AFTER years working inside royal residences, Anne Simmons, former royal cleaner, knows how to care for garments to the highest standard.

She’s handled everything from ceremonial uniforms to everyday essentials — and surprisingly, some of her most trusted laundry tools can be found in your local UK supermarket.

So, if you feel like your go-to detergent or fabric conditioner is no longer doing the job properly, fear not – as some of Anna's top picks go for as little as £1.20.

Ariel Original Washing Liquid

Although the former cleaner has tried and tested several laundry products, there's one she prefers more than any other.

“I’ve used countless detergents over the years, but Ariel Original remains one of the most reliable.”

Raving about the washing essential, which sells for just £3.00 with a Tesco Clubcard, Anne said: ”It lifts stains without damaging fibres and always leaves clothes smelling fresh.”

Not only is the bargain find ”brilliant at removing tough stains from both everyday wear and formal shirts”, the formula will also leave ”clothes smelling professionally cleaned”.

The cut-price deal means that thrifty shoppers will spend a mere 6p per wash with the Clubcard.

Elbow Grease All Purpose Degreaser

Whether it's a lavish wedding or meeting with the presidents from around the world, the Royals have a busy schedule – that also involves eating plenty of dishes.

Sometimes, this means stubborn stains on their clothing – but luckily, Anne's found an affordable product to tackle this.

“If I had to pick one stain pre-treater for everything from shirt collars to food spills, this would be it,” she said, singing praises of Elbow Grease All Purpose Degreaser.

According to the expert, who recommended spraying directly onto problem areas before washing, the £1.20 buy is effective oil, ink and tough food stains.

Meanwhile, for stubborn stains, she advised to leave it on for 10 minutes before popping clothes in the machine.

Fairy Non Bio Washing Pods

“Even at the palace, we had to be mindful of delicate skin. Fairy Non Bio has been a staple for years.”

The pods – her go-to for bed linen, towels and anything worn close to the skin – are currently on offer for just £5.70 at Tesco if you have a Clubcard.

10 Grossest Areas People Forget to Clean

By Danielle Mason, who has 20 years of experience

Under and Behind the Fridge
Crumbs, dust, and spills accumulate over time, attracting pests and creating bad odours.

Shower Curtain & Liner
These collect mildew and soap scum but are often overlooked. Wash or replace them regularly to keep your bathroom fresh.

Toothbrush Holder
One of the germiest places in the bathroom, filled with bacteria and toothpaste residue. Rinse and disinfect it weekly.

Dishwasher Filter
Food particles and grease build up, leading to unpleasant smells and reduced efficiency. Remove and clean the filter every few weeks.

Washing Machine Seal
The rubber gasket traps mould, mildew, and detergent buildup. Wipe it down with white vinegar and leave the door open to air dry.

Light Switches and Remote Controls
Touched daily but rarely cleaned, making them germ hotspots. Wipe them down with disinfectant regularly.

Under the Sofa Cushions
Crumbs, dust, and even lost items hide in the cracks. Remove the cushions and vacuum thoroughly.

Kitchen Sink & Plughole
Food residue builds up, causing bad odours. Pour boiling water, bicarbonate of soda, and vinegar down the drain to freshen it.

Ceiling Fans
Dust piles up on the blades and gets redistributed into the air when turned on. Use a microfibre cloth or pillowcase to clean them easily.

Doormats
They trap dirt and bacteria from shoes but are rarely washed or vacuumed. Shake them out weekly and deep clean them every month.

Sharing her three favourite laundry staples, Anne said that the pods are also easy to use with no mess over overdosing – and pouring money down the drain, quite literally.

“You don’t need ten products to get the job done. I always tell people to stick to three reliable staples—these are mine.

”They work for palace laundry rooms and they’ll work in your home too.”

“Looking after your clothes properly is just as important as how they fit,” said a spokesperson from Edit Suits.

”With Anne’s practical advice and affordable product picks, anyone can keep their wardrobe in excellent condition without overspending.”
