DRIVERS hoping to sell their cars have been warned over a “crafty and illegal” tactic being used to bump down the price.
Cops have caught on to people in Dawlish, Devon, posing as genuine buyers only to damage the – and then requesting them at a lower price.
Devon and Police are now on the hunt for two men after receiving reports of criminal damage to a range of cars.
The alleged scammers have been pouring an unknown substance on the engine while the owner was “distracted.”
Once the vehicle was deliberately damaged, the pair complained there was a problem with the vehicle and demanded a discount.
One of the con artists struck on January 3 after one of the motors was advertised for sale online.
The fraudster then damaged the vehicle, attempting to make it seem as if there was a fault all along.
Cops have released two images of men they would like to talk to in connection with the crimes.
They have urged anyone who may know them to get in touch.
Devon and Cornwall Police said: “We are seeking the public’s help identifying these two men following a spate of criminal damage to motor vehicles in Devon.
“It was reported that vehicles listed for sale were being identified online, test driven and while the owner was distracted, deliberately damaged to get the vehicle at a cheaper price.
“Damage was caused by pouring a substance into the engine to make it appear that there was a fault. One such incident took place in Dawlish on 3 January.
“It is believed the two men pictured may be able to help officers with their enquiries. Anybody with information should contact police on 101 or via our website quoting 50250003090.”

The Vertu dealership in Barnstaple, , has already closed its doors.
Existing clients received the decision, informing them that the official last working day would be on March 28.
The email was sent from Anthony Masterson, Group Operations Director, who recommended the branch as the closest alternative.
