A MICROBIOLOGIST revealed the terrifying reason you should never eat food off the floor.

NicholasAicher, who works as a senior quality control analyst, put the infamous – and shared a “nasty” surprise.

The regularly goes viral sharing clips testing the cleanliness of various everyday items with his 440,000 followers.

In a recent clip, which garnered over one million views, he tested the amount of on food after it had been on the floor for different intervals.

This is included food that had been on the floor for:

  • Less than one second
  • Five seconds
  • 10 seconds
  • 20 seconds
  • 30 seconds
  • One minute

“I thought it would be fun for people to know all the little nastiness that we don't think about every day,”; the Chicago-based content creator said.

In the video, Nicholas can be seen placing a piece of plastic on the ground for the various time limits, before incubating the samples.

He later tested them for , with the plastic visibly showing bacterial growth on all samples.

Showing the sample for under one second, in which Nicholas briefly touched it to the ground, he says: “Looks like even 0 seconds is too long.”;

But interestingly, the sample held down for five seconds appears to have roughly the same amount of bacteria – essentially proving the “five second rule”’”.

Moving on, he shows that the sample put on the floor for 10 seconds has “a bit more”; bacterial growth.

Samples that remained on the floor 20 and 30 seconds once again were noticeably more germy.

Bizarrely, the sample placed down for one minute appears to have a similar amount of bacteria to the five second sample.

Nicholasadded: “Five seconds or 60, it’ll be nasty either way.”;

It comes after a doctor warned against wearing shoes in your home – as it may have in some cases.

Nicholas's experiment garnered 19,000 likes on , where one viewer commented: “Meh. I was doing the five second rule throughout my childhood and I'm still healthy.”;

“The real factor is just how badly you don't want to waste what was dropped,”; another user joked.

Someone else added: “I'll pretend I didn't see this so I can keep blissfully doing the five second rule.”;

“Never eating food from the floor again…”; said one horrified user.

“Extra flavour,”; quipped another viewer.
