BREAKING: Suspected herdsmen attack Benue again, kill guard

Published on April 05, 2025 at 06:12 AM

A security guard was late Friday night reportedly killed by suspected herdsmen at the Otobi Dam in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The latest attack comes on the heels of a series of deadly incidents across the Otukpo axis in recent weeks.

The lawmaker representing Otukpo/Akpa State Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, Angbo Kennedy, who confirmed the latest attack, added that urgent intervention was needed to stop the bloodshed.

He said, “This is becoming too much, a guard was killed this evening at the Otobi dam by herdsmen. Please let's watch out for each other. We must resort to self help.”;

As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the slain guard has not been officially released, and no arrest has been made in connection with the incident.

Residents are calling on the Benue State Government and security agencies to intensify surveillance and deploy more personnel to rural flashpoints, particularly around strategic infrastructure like the Otobi Dam.

The attack at Otobi follows similar killings in Okpomaju, Okete and Asa settlements within Otukpo LGA earlier this year, which left several dead and others displaced.

Just yesterday, gunmen hijacked a fully-loaded bus belonging to Benue Links, killing two persons and kidnapping 13 others.
