Taraba Monarch warns against use of chemicals, explosives for fishing

The Chief of Mutumbiyu in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State, Alhaji Sulaiman Muhammed, has issued a stern warning to fishermen in his domain against the use of chemicals and explosives in fishing activities, describing the practice as destructive and unlawful.

The monarch gave the warning at his palace in Mutumbiyu shortly after the turbanning ceremony of Alhaji Bala Jambari as Sarkin Tarun (Leader of Fishermen) and Alhaji Tukura Julde as Danrimin Mutumbiyu.

He condemned the harmful fishing methods, blaming them for the drastic decline in fish populations and the extinction of several species in rivers and ponds across the state.

“Fish populations have drastically reduced, and many species are now extinct. Those who depend on fishing for their livelihoods are suffering. This is largely due to the use of chemicals and explosives,”; he said.

Alhaji Sulaiman reminded fishermen that there are existing environmental protection laws in Taraba State that prohibit such practices and vowed that his traditional council would collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure strict enforcement.

He tasked the newly turbaned Sarkin Tarun with the responsibility of monitoring fishing activities and educating his members on the dangers of illegal fishing methods.

“Your role as leader of fishermen comes with great responsibility. You must ensure that your members do not engage in practices that destroy our aquatic ecosystem,”; the monarch added.

He further urged residents of the area to remain peaceful and report any suspicious activities to security agencies, emphasizing the need for collective vigilance in safeguarding the environment and maintaining security.
