Tariffs: China signals readiness for US trade talks, warns against threats

Published on April 23, 2025 at 12:06 PM

China has expressed willingness to resume trade talks with the United States.

The development comes a day after President Donald Trump suggested cutting tariffs on Chinese goods.

However, Beijing warned it won’t negotiate under continued threats.

“We don’t want a trade war, but we’re not afraid of one,”; China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said.

“If we talk, the door is open.”;

Both sides appear to be softening their stance.

Trump had stated he was not playing “hardball”; and expects a deal, with the Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also predicting a de-escalation of tensions.

This shift comes after weeks of rising tariffs and sharp rhetoric that rattled global markets.

The change in tone has helped fuel a stock market rebound, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rising 2.4% on Wednesday.

At a meeting with Azerbaijan’s president, President Xi criticized tariffs as harmful to global trade.

China also pushed back against US moves in Latin America, accusing Washington of trying to control the Panama Canal.

China insists that the US must stop threats and show mutual respect for meaningful talks.
